Unix
Unix is a flexible and powerful operating system. Invented in 1969 it exists in dozens of versions, known as flavours. Each implementation, or flavour, is similar to use because each provides a core set of basic Unix commands. Different flavours are designed to work with different types of hardware and each provides its own unique commands or features.
Some Unix flavours such as Solaris, AIX and SCO are commercially available. Others, such as OpenBSD and Linux are available for free.
The main features of Unix are: multi-tasking - the operating system can handle many jobs simultaneously; multi-user - many users can be logged onto a Unix system, performing tasks simultaneously; a rich variety of programming languages are supported;
